
A series of flat-pack laser-cut panels that transform light into radiant beams.
Design Intent
Inspiration
Using leftover wood from past projects, I explored with laser cutting and began to create a series of leaf-like puzzle pieces that assemble together. This evolved into a continuous ornamental form. I really liked the elegance of the form so I developed a center base that can hold a light bulb. What began as a table-top sculptural piece transformed into a hanging lampshade. The arrangement of the panels illuminated the cieling with rays like the sun. I created a lamp series that is sustainable and can be repeatedly fabricated from reclaimed wood for future versions.


Nothing repeats in nature. There is something poetic about the different shapes, sizes, patterns, and arrangements of leaves. I connect this diversity to how no two people are alike. Though leaves cannot speak, they each possess distinct characteristics that give them unique personalities. I wanted to explore a design that could be reconfigured and disassembled while preserving the organic qualities and individuality found in nature.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I was able to create different versions of leaf-like forms with the same circular base. This consistent base was designed to accommodate a standard light bulb in any of the digital iterations. Having this base, I am able to create any design for the panels to embody the light fixtures in this series.






Process
I imported my illustrator file into the control system to ensure it is correctly scaled within the 18x24 wood panel. I took up the entire laser bed with one piece of wood that I had taken from a scrap bin. I intended on using the entire space of wood so it would not go to waste. Next, the laser cut into the panel, following the shapes of the base and panels. I began piecing each panel onto the base to see the form come to life. The last step was to insert the bulb head into the center of the base and screw the bulb in place.
Material Exploration
I exported the laser-cut files for metal fabrication to test the material behavior within my design. This process revealed vast differences between metal and plywood in both structure and light performance when applied to the same fixture.
