SITTING ON A CLOUD

For this project, we redesigned the Rietveld Chair is a minature verson of the real display.

This redesign of the Rietveld Chair is a minature verson of the real display. The original consists of primary colors and flat surfaces. I decided to laser cut flower patterns on the base of the chair to alter the style. For the color scheme, I went for a monochromatic color scheme of dark and light blues. For another effect, I added quick touches of faded white to give the illusion of clouds. This simply began as a chair redesign, but then I became inspired to make it a comfortable furniture piece of my pet leopard gecko, Pringle. With my gecko in mind, I used pink foam to create a comfy cushion with white cotton fabric pinned into it.

  • decorative small centerpiece
  • kid-friendly toy that is scaled for any doll
  • Party addition to hold a bottle or candle
  • monochromatic colors aren’t overwhelming
  • laser cut details hidden

PROCESS

First, I measured out the size of all the individual pieces. I attatched the thin wooden dowels to create the base structure of the chair by drilling and inserting toothpics them glueing them sealed. Then I spray painted this part before adding the seat pieces. For the long backside base of the chair, I decided to laser cut a pattern to make it interactive. I individually spray painted both seat pieces and armrests. The last step was to glue all the pieces together and make the chair structure. I felt that it needed something, so I added a cushion by needle-felting into a piece of pinkfoam with a cotton shirt and pins.
