Lunar Phased was designed to celebrate the moon's continuous cycle of transformation. By translating the lunar phases into objects shadowed by light, I am able to capture how light can reveal and conceal form. The use of recycled materials adds to the narrative and the commitment to sustainability while giving new life to discarded resources.
The sun is the only celestial that shines its own light in our solar system. I was inspired by the way the sun reflects off the surface of the moon, emitting what we see as moonlight.
It has always been interesting to me the way the moon has different phases. Some nights, its entire face glows brightly, while other times only a thin crescent is visible.

Amate Bark
Handmade tree bark paper scraps, lightweight, translucent and textural.

Discarded in good condition, adding grip, balance, and tactility.
Plywood
Reclaimed pieces, manipulated on a laser cutter to create structural details.

How the Material tells the story
The integration of the dreamcatcher added a spiritual element to the cyclical narrative of nature. The hoop represents the circle of life which embraces nature and it’s creatures. The web, which is the nucleus of my design, is the “catcher” of all negative spirits. It not only reinforces my design structurally and physically, but also emotionally. In Indigenous cultures, dreamcatchers were hand-woven to protect people in their sleep as night fell and the moon came out. The moon nutures humans to rest, and a dreamcatcher shields in a state of slumber. Form Development
Process
It is meticulously crafted with plywood cut-outs shaped like ornate dream-catchers. Cascading below is amate bark that diffuses the light as a symbol of earth’s fragility. Its omni-directional amber bulb mimics the warm glow of the sun, creating a celestial ambiance that soothes the spirit. The LED light evokes a relaxing atmosphere with peaceful shadows of lunar phases.
