The laser-cut engravings translate the movement of rippling water into a controlled surface pattern. Nimbus is designed as a multifunctional piece that enhances an interior space through form, light, and color. Using amorphous textures, I aim to challege current contemporary furniture that is often geometric and static. Inspired by the rippling movement of water and the reflective qualities of a sunset horizon, its fluid forms are structured by a concave, geometric storage space, which can also serve as a resting spot for pets.
I wanted to highlight the art of natural phenomenons, where nature and time unify to create shifting environments. There is something rhythmic in the way sunset light interacts with water surfaces. Waves shift as clouds move across the sky, creating a circular interplay of reflection and color.
While these moments are often captured in two-dimensional forms such as photography, I wanted to translate this moment in time into a three-dimensional object.

Form Development
Process
Creating random and organic overlapping lines allowed the texture to feel like it was in motion. I generated these lines by layering an image of ripples over the cloud-like shape of the table. Then I masked this image to auto-select any lines that were visible and underlying. I used a laser cutter and engraver to ensure all these details were preserved within the form. The base of the table is made up of rectangular plates that create a hollow form, intentionally allowing it to be a makeshift space. The entire design is one material altogether so it feels sleek and uniform.
